Getting started with naos code
All you need to start: install it, log in, ask for changes to your code and know what you approve.
Install
On Linux (x64), with the executable: nothing else to install. Unpack it into its own folder and link it from a folder on your PATH, so its helpers and the license notice stay together and out of bin:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/naos ~/.local/bin
tar -xzf naos-code-<version>-linux-x64.tar.gz -C ~/.local/share/naos
ln -sf ~/.local/share/naos/naos ~/.local/bin/naos
If naos is not found afterwards, add ~/.local/bin to your PATH (for example, export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH" in your ~/.bashrc). The first time it runs a command, it saves about 2.4 MB into ~/.cache/pkg (a native part); everything else stays inside the binary.
With the npm package, on Linux and, with Node.js 24.9 or newer, on macOS and Windows (not tested on macOS and Windows yet):
npm install -g ./inferencekey-naos-code-<version>.tgz
Log in
Once on each computer. The browser opens, you log in with your Naos account and authorize the computer. If the browser does not open, naos login --manual lets you paste the code the page shows.
naos login
naos estado
naos estado tells you your plan and how much you have used. To log out on that computer, naos salir.
Open naos in your project
Go to the folder of your project and type naos. Type what you need and press Enter; the answer shows up while it is generated. You can also start with the request itself:
cd my-project
naos "add tests to utils.py"
While Naos answers, Ctrl+C cancels the answer and you type again. For a single task from a script, with no conversation, use naos headless "task".
What you approve
Before it changes anything, Naos shows you what it will do and asks you:
- Create a file: the path and the content.
- Replace a file: what changes against what it has now, with the number of each line.
- Edit a file: the lines it removes (-) and the ones it adds (+), with two lines of context and, when Naos can read the file, the number of each line.
- Run a command: the whole command, every line of it.
- Open a web address: the full address.
You answer y (yes, this time only), n (no: Naos tells the model not to do it) or a (yes to all until you type /new). If you do not understand what it asks, answer n.
When it does not fit on the screen, Naos shows part of what it removes and part of what it adds and says: "It does not fit whole (N more lines): press v to see it before you answer.". With v (view all) it prints it whole and asks again; you can press it as often as you like.
Commands run confined to the project folder. When one asks to leave that sandbox, Naos warns you in red with the reason and always asks, also with yes to all. After you approve you see the result: the last lines of the command's output, or "Wrote hello.py (+12 -3)" with the lines added and removed.
Commands
- /help: the help, with these commands.
- /status: your plan, how much you have used and the key of this computer.
- /new: starts a new conversation (and asks everything again).
- /continue: goes back to the previous conversation of this folder. If another one was open, it is kept: /continue again goes back to it.
- /exit or Ctrl+D: closes naos. Ctrl+C on an empty line asks first: press Ctrl+C again to exit.
Where your conversations are kept
Only on your computer, never on the Naos server: in ~/.naos/sessions (or in $NAOS_HOME/sessions if you changed the naos folder), with everything said and the files that were read. To delete them, close naos and run this command: it deletes that folder and everything naos keeps about them outside it, and tells you how many it deleted. Your login and your settings stay.

Privacy
What you type and what Naos reads from your folder goes to the model through Naos: inferencekey runs the model on its own servers, measures the usage and does not send it to any external model provider.
Reading files needs no question. Naos may read any file of the folder you open it in to understand your code, also a .env with secrets. Open it only in folders whose content you want to send to the model, never in your whole home folder.
VS Code extension
Naos also works inside VS Code, with the same account and the same plan. Download the .vsix file from the Downloads page and install it with this command, or from VS Code: in Extensions, the three dots menu and «Install from VSIX...».
code --install-extension naos-vscode-<version>.vsix
Sign in. Open the Naos view in the side bar and press «Sign in with Naos». The browser asks you to authorize the computer and VS Code comes back by itself. The first time, VS Code asks «Allow 'Naos' extension to open this URI?»: press Open. It is a security notice of VS Code; if you tick «Do not ask me again for this extension», it does not come back. If the browser does not go back to VS Code, use «Sign in with a code» and paste the code the page shows.
What you approve. Before changing a file, Naos opens the change in a diff: the file as it is on the left, how it will be on the right. Press Save to apply it or Reject so it is not made (Naos tells the model it did not happen). Before running a command it shows you the whole command: Run Command runs it and Reject does not. To open a web address, Approve or Reject.
If the file Naos wants to change is open with unsaved changes, it leaves it alone and tells you: «Save hola.py before Naos edits it.». Save it (or discard your changes) and ask again.
Reads. Naos reads the files of the folders you have open in VS Code without asking. To read any file outside them it asks first and shows you the whole path: with Reject its content never leaves your computer. If you open VS Code with no folder, it asks for every read.
Your usage. The status bar, at the bottom, shows your plan and how much of the 5 hour window you have used (for example «Naos: Pro · 12 %»). Clicking it gives «See my usage in Naos», which opens the Your usage page with each cap of your plan as a percentage and when it renews, «Help», which opens this guide, and «Sign out».
If you reach a cap. Your access is paused until it renews: the status bar says «Naos: paused until» and the time, the chat explains it instead of answering, and Your usage shows which cap it was and when you are back. You do not have to do anything: it comes back by itself.
Sign out. In the status bar menu, «Sign out». The key of that computer is turned off and deleted from your disk, and the computer is gone from Connected devices in your account. If you are going to uninstall the extension, sign out first; if you already uninstalled it, disconnect the computer from Connected devices, in your account.
Your conversations. They are kept only on your computer, in ~/.naos/vscode/data (or in $NAOS_HOME/vscode/data), never on the Naos server. To delete them, open History in the Naos view and delete them one by one or all at once.
naos code is built on DeepSeek Harness (MIT).
